MacOS X Multiple Vulnerabilities

Last Update Date: 28 Jan 2011 Release Date: 10 Oct 2008 5375 Views

RISK: Medium Risk

Multiple vulnerabilities have been identified in Apple Mac OS X,which could be exploited by remote or local attackers to disclose sensitive information, bypass security restrictions, cause a denial of service or compromise an affected system. These issues are caused by buffer overflow, range checking, error recovery, memory corruption, signedness, race condition, insecure permissions, input validation, and design errors in Apache, ClamAV, ColorSync, CUPS,Finder, libxslt, MySQL Server, Networking, PHP, Postfix, PSNormalizer, QuickLook, rlogin, Script Editor,Single Sign-On, Tomcat, vim, and Weblog.

1) Some vulnerabilities in Apache can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) and conduct cross-site request forgery attacks.

2) Some vulnerabilities in ClamAV can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS.

3) A buffer overflow error exists within ColorSync when processing images with a specially crafted embedded ICC profile. This can be exploited to e.g. execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into viewing a malicious image.

4) A vulnerability exists in CUPS, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.

5) An error within libxslt can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS or compromise a vulnerable system.

6) Some vulnerabilities in MySQL can be exploited by malicious, local users to manipulate certain data and bypass certain security restrictions, by malicious users to bypass certain security restrictions, and by malicious people to cause a DoS and compromise a vulnerable system.

7) An unspecified error within the local IPC component of configd's EAPOLController plugin can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code with escalated privileges.

8) A weakness in the Postfix configuration can be exploited by malicious people to send direct emails to users or otherwise use the SMTP protocol during a one minute time frame after e.g. postfix was used by a command line application.

9) An unspecified error exists within PSNormalizer when processing bounding box comments. This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code by e.g. tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PostScript document.

10) A signedness error exists within QuickLook when processing columns in Microsoft Excel files. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary code by e.g. tricking a user into opening a specially crafted Microsoft Excel file.

11) An implementation error causes rlogind to apply hosts.equiv configuration entries to root, although the manpage states that this is not the case. This results in unexpected behavior and may allow intended security restrictions to be bypassed.

12) The ScriptEditor application creates temporary files in an insecure manner. This can be exploited to perform certain actions (e.g. overwrite arbitrary files) with the privileges of another user.

13) Some vulnerabilities in Apache Tomcat can be exploited by malicious, local users to bypass certain security restrictions, and by malicious people to disclose system or potentially sensitive information, conduct cross-site scripting attacks, manipulate data, and bypass certain security restrictions.

14) Some weaknesses and vulnerabilities in vim can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges, and by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

15) Weblog fails to check for certain error conditions. This results in the Weblog server not enforcing access control lists when adding a user with multiple short names to the access control list.
